This vehicle gets a lot of stares from other travelers as it heads up the primitive road at the end of the Main Boulder river valley. It seems to go where most other vehicles would not think of traveling!
The trip to the old ghost town of Independence and then on to Blue Lake takes most of the day because of the primitive road…and we mean PRIMITIVE! The 16 miles of rocky, steep, and bumpy terrain gives the guests a new sense of what a remote adventure really is. At different seasons of the year the Pinzgauer moves through high water, snow drifts, and up the steep muddy terrain. Nothing seems to be too tough for it to handle.
Once the guests get settled onto the back benches of the mountain vehicle it’s off for quite an outdoor experience. Our guests often remark about the size of boulders and potholes that our Pinzgauer seems to maneuver with little difficulty. The ropes above their head help keep the riders in their seats so as not to end up in the lap of the person across from them. Riding in the back is like riding in a convertible with the top down. The magnificent view of the mountains is panoramic and breathtaking with the fresh clean air as a bonus.
Once in a great while even our mighty warrior has a hiccup! Our driver Joe is well equipped in getting the tire changed quickly, so everyone can head home in plenty of time where a hearty home-cooked ranch meal awaits them. Oh, the stories they will have to tell after exploring this unique location in the mountains of Montana that few people can access.
